125 Things Small Business Owners Need To Know To Build Success

A Smart Conversation with a Smart Business Advisor – Especially for Authors Who Understand Their Book is a Small Business

Small business owners, aspiring small business owners, and/or entrepreneurs (which aren’t we all?) need to watch this podcast. I don’t say ‘need’ lightly. I invited Chris Owen from J. Galt to participate in a Smart Conversation because he so impressed me at a recent  @BOSSAcademyCommunity  meeting where he spoke about the #1 thing we need – and so few of us have. ???

It’s credit. It’s cash flow to operate and grow. It’s understanding how to build credit that will help enhance your business growth and put you on the path to success. And, it’s also how not to do that. Because the how not to do that is what most of us are actually doing. ?

You will be amazed, shocked, illuminated, and worried a bit after you watch this. In a good way. ??

As a small business owner myself, I know we all tend to be worried or concerned – about where the next client is coming from, about how to get that new website built, about managing social media (good grief, social media!), marketing promotions, new products, you name it. We have worries. What Chris doesn’t want us to worry about is money. Why? Because the money is available. If you know where to look. ?

Maybe look isn’t the right word. Maybe the better word is where to go. Is it to a bank? Maybe. Is it to relatives? Probably not. Is it to a credit union? Possibly. Where else can a small business owner acquire the cash he or she needs to build their business or to take it to the next level? ?

Chris Owen can’t share all 125 things you should consider, that he knows you must consider, in one video or blog post, but he shares enough to make this half-hour count. He tells us that if we’re doing the right things to position ourselves as a good risk, the money is there. The issue is – what does ‘position ourselves as a good risk’ mean? ?

This video is especially important for those who are RISK AVERSE. Like myself. I learned a lot by interviewing Chris and I’m eager to share it with you. ✅

p.s. hey, psst… all you writers and authors out there – this is definitely for you. Your book is a business. If it’s not your entire business, it’s a big part of it. ?

The Story of Cash Flow

Let me share a little about Chris himself. And I include his entire bio because it is so well written. It even includes a story.

Chris Owen is a seasoned professional with over two decades of experience in supporting, consulting, and championing small businesses. Presently, he holds the role of Regional Managing Partner at J Galt, where he dedicates himself to advocating for small businesses nationwide.

From an early age, Chris witnessed the profound impact that small businesses had on his community. His great uncle’s establishment of A-dec, which employed the parents, aunts, uncles, and even classmates of Chris, left an indelible mark on him. With numerous family members still working at A-dec, the enduring legacy of entrepreneurship in his Pacific Northwest hometown was undeniable.

During his young adult years, Chris gained valuable expertise by working with various small-to-medium sized companies. Sales, operations, customer success, and marketing were among the areas in which he honed his skills. Fueled by his admiration for entrepreneurship, Chris eventually embarked on his own business ventures, becoming a small business owner alongside his wife. Today, he boasts multiple successful enterprises.

Chris firmly believes that small-to-medium businesses and their owners serve as the heart and soul of their communities, as well as the backbone of our nation. Driven by this conviction, he devotes his time to advocating for, supporting, and uplifting these business owners and their companies.

As a Regional Managing Partner at J Galt, Chris dedicates the majority of his efforts to educating business owners about the primary challenge faced by small businesses: CASH FLOW. Through his guidance, he empowers small business owners to construct a robust Business Credit profile based solely on their EIN (Employer Identification Number), intricately tied to their businesses, and entirely free from personal guarantees. Chris’s goal is to equip entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive in their ventures and achieve sustainable success.

All the Things You Thought You Knew WERE WRONG

That’s right. I’m sorry I have to be the one to tell you this, but I didn’t know it until I heard Chris speak. And honestly, the video isn’t about doing things wrong. It’s about understanding how to create credit and use it properly. ??

It’s about how to get a business credit card. Yes, a business credit card. Used exclusively for business. Oh, you have that? Maybe you do. Maybe you don’t. Watch and learn. ?

Who among us has a company vehicle? We solopreneurs and entrepreneurs with very small staffs. We use our own car. It’s easier that way. But is it right? What could happen – if – if – well, you can use your imagination for that if. Because, it could happen. And where would you be then? ?

While Chris can’t cover the entire 125 points he uses in his work, he covers a range of them in this video. He is generous and demonstrative in his advice. He tells good stories. He reminds us that just having a DBA or an LLC may not be enough. ?

WATCH this video – it’s below, it’s captioned, it’s one of the most valuable videos you will see this year. I always tell you to take notes, and this time I MEAN IT!

About Yvonne DiVita

My friends call me The Book Whisperer. I'm a Book Coach and Author advisor. I help entrepreneurs and successful business professionals put their story into a book. A book that matters. That leaves a legacy. That creates community. That helps build business and invites more speaking opportunities. A book that builds authority. I’m a writer. An author. An advisor. A former book publisher. In 2015, I was awarded the title of Woman of the Year in the Women in the Pet Industry Network. It was the most wonderful accolade and highest honor I have ever received! My favorite saying is: "It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things." Making the Most of Your LinkedIn Profile

The experts I talk to, and follow on LinkedIn, tell me this - it's about what you can do for someone else, and not what you've accomplished in your life. Yes, there's a place to validate your expertise (I would say it's in your posts, but that's a given, isn't it? Isn't it? 👀) . But put that after showcasing what you can do to solve a problem I have.
